YWY, Visions [YWY, Visões]
2023. 15', video, color, sound. Spoken in portuguese.

YWY lands in a Portuguese beach in the periphery of Lisbon. There she once again meets Capivara, now living peacefully in a garden, tending to plants from across the world, while illegally changing the eyes of androids so that they can pass unnoticed. With his help she will face Lisbon, touring it from the imperial city center to its neglected suburbs.

YWY, Visions is the last project in the YWY series of works and texts that began in 2017, including films, installations, and a book published by Sternberg Press in 2022 title YWY, Searching for a Character Between Future Worlds: Gender, Ecology, Science Fiction. The series focuses on the android character YWY, played by indigenous actress and performer Zahy Tentehar Guajajara, a long-time collaborator of Neves Marques. After several works in Brazil, the film redirects its attention to Lisbon, Portugal, in a final encounter between Neves Marques and Zahy Tentehar Guajajara. An ode to science fiction, from Philip K. Dick to The Matrix, the films shows a reversal of the classical colonial paintings depicting the arrival of the Portuguese on Brazilian shores, a martial arts fight under the gaze of the murals painted by major Portuguese artist Almada Negreiros in the 1940s fascist port Gare de Conde d’Óbidos, and an android mocking the large fascist monument Padrão dos Descobrimentos before the river Tagus.

Created in dialogue with actress and performer Zahy Tentehar Guajajara, YWY means land or territory in Ze'eg eté, language of the Tenetehara-Guajajara people. The YWY Series includes the films Exterminator Seed (2017) YWY, The Android (2017), Learning to Live with the Enemy (2017), the animation YWY, Searching for a Character Between East and West (2021), the sound piece Hekepe (2020) by Zahy Tentehar Guajajara, and the anthology edited by Neves Marques YWY, Searching for a Character Between Future Worlds: Gender, Ecology, Science Fiction (Sternberg Press, 2022). It has been the subject of several institutional exhibitions, such as at 1646 (The Hague), CA2M (Madrid), CaixaForum (Barcelona), and Palais de Tokyo (Paris).
